him with the most pathetic look in his eyes before climbing off the bed and curling onto the floor with a soft whine. When Duane turned back to Arie, he saw bright blue eyes shining back at him.

“I see you met my usual bed partner. Every night they put him downstairs, and he always manages to sneak up here during the night.” “That moose sneaks?” Duane said, definitely surprised. “Don’t insult him. He’s sweet, though he is a bit of a bed pig. He has something in common with a certain sheriff’s deputy I know.”

“Are you complaining?” Duane asked, sincerely hoping Arie wasn’t.

“No. I just curled closer to you.” A soft knock on the door interrupted them, and then the door opened further. “Morning, Robbie,” Arie said.

“You two lovebirds need to come downstairs if you want some breakfast,” Robbie told them, and Duane looked at Arie, wondering just how loud they’d been last night. “You’re lucky you didn’t wake Jakey, or otherwise Geoff and Eli would be really peeved with both of you. may have told you that you were too loud was full of crap—because you were fantastic last night.”

“Oh.” Arie smiled.

“But there is something I have to tell you. My mother is on her way. She called me just before you came downstairs last night.” Duane saw the questioning look on Arie’s face. “I know, it’s a long story, but

she’ll be here tonight. The thing is that she’s a little closed-minded and very stubborn. She says that we need to talk, and I have no idea what that means, but it can’t be good. She won’t get in until this evening.”

“Is she staying with you?” Arie asked. “No. She said she was staying at a hotel.” Duane hugged Arie as he looked at the ceiling over his shoulder. “I wonder just what in the hell she really wants.”

“I guess you’ll find out when she gets here,” Arie said quietly, and he seemed to be pulling away. Duane wasn’t about to let him. “I guess so. But I still want to be with you tonight. I have to work at eleven, and I expect my mother sometime this evening, but would it be okay if I
